AthenSYN II: GOING VIRAL exhibition and symposium for Contemporary Greek Art in Berlin will open on 20 January 2022, 5-9pm, with 14 artistic positions of the generation Y in the newly established STEINZEIT Gallery in Berlin Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. Exhibition duration: January 21 – March 3, 2022.

The participating artists of the exhibition, curated by Sotirios Bahtsetzis and Katja Ehrhardt, are raising questions that concern our future coexistence. The aftermath of the pandemic literally illustrates the meaning of the word "viral" as it is also used in a digital context. Thousands of lives can depend on the actions of an individual as epidemics spread.
How isolated do we feel and act as individuals? AthenSYN II: GOING VIRAL focuses on the subtle connection of all existence, the importance of taking initiative and the search for ecological and affectively sustainable ways of living.
In AthenSYN II: GOING VIRAL, AthenSYN presents paintings, videos, sculptures and installations by young Greek artists who have been awarded the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Artist Fellowship by ARTWORKS created against their background experience between the socio-economic crisis of 2009 and the current Covid-19 Pandemic. The positioning of Greek art between the global South and the North, lack of economic resources and prosperity, political center and periphery, traditionalism and innovation is characteristic.
Panos Kompis' work is a poetic reference to human existence in defense, while Anestis Ioannou deals with the construction of subjectivity in urban environments. Kyriaki Goni thematizes the relationship between man and machine, which Andreas Ragnar Kassapis examines in the tension between perception of naturally and technically generated images. In the age of augmented reality, Latent Community interweaves social engagement in participatory and performative strategies to create hybrid video installations, Sofia Dona illuminates historical and social site-specific influences through alienation, Collectif MASI develops an experimental approach at the interface of architecture, sociology and visual arts of urban scenography with social art. Maro Fasouli creates connections between somatic practices, work and gender, Ileana Arnaoutou combines in her painting and sculpture the topography of longing, mourning and healing with somatic processes and creates a “landscape of affect”. Maria Tsagkari's works show hidden narratives that respond subversively to historical references and thereby pose questions about the politics of desire. The works of Stefania Strouza and Irini Miga awaken associations between the symbolic world of objects and ideas of temporality, corporeality and geography. Maria Louizou's large-format sculptures show the performer as a living resonance body. Ersi Varveri shows transformational processes in constant becoming in the fluidity of existence..
The exhibition opens with a hybrid symposium ENTANGLED WORLD from 21-23 January with artists, theorists and activists from Greece and Germany on sustainability, self-organization and alternative economies with workshops, discussions and film screening. Zafos Xagoraris, “Open Air classroom and learning from nature” (in English) presentation and discussion in the context of Zafos Xagoraris' Tilted Classroom, an open-air installation in the garden of FREIRAUM in der Box. Students of CeMoG, Center for Modern Greece, are invited to engage in a discussion on topics related to nature, health and education, the history of the open-air school movement and the alternative educational systems in the early 20th century. A short presentation of the work follows outdoors.

4pm Madlen Anipsitaki/ Simon Riedler, Founders of Collectif MASI “Weaving the urban fabric” (in English) With their projects "A thread network in the urban fabric", "1 km as the crow flies", "Red carpet", "The walls' crossing" , Collectif MASI experiments with passages between private and public space. A worldwide digital exchange is a common practice for many of us, often without even knowing our immediate neighbors. The urban scenography by MASI provokes everyday events on our doorstep and aims at the collective appropriation of the public sphere, while involving local communities as actors of a social art.
5.15pm Valentina Karga, Artist, architect, and professor (Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg, HFBK) Co-founder of Soft Agency (s-o-f-t.agency/) and Collective Disaster (collectivedisaster.org) “Art as simulation” (in English) Art enables the simulation of alternative life models and the creation of infrastructures for a harmonious coexistence with our natural ecosystems. Valentina Karga presents examples of her work in which an assimilation of these life forms may be experienced by the participant through their simulation in art projects.
6.30pm Sofia Bempeza, artist, art and cultural theorist, co-curator of the queer-feminist festivals Aphrodite* in Athens „Temporäre Adraneia, Widerstandsfähigkeit und Möglichkeiten von Kollektivität“ (in German) As art and culture producers, we increasingly face each other as capitalized life forms: we are confronted with the omnipresent economic rationality that sets the entrepreneurial model of subjectification as a benchmark and, last but not least, makes practices of collective care, solidarity and transversal organization more difficult . The concept of the art strike - be it in the form of aesthetic resistance, as a temporary adraneia (inactivity) or as an organized cultural-political intervention - makes both the conditions of artistic productivity and the contradictions of creative work visible, as well as the mechanisms of distinction in the art field. By refusing and interrupting the ongoing somatic and temporal neoliberal conditioning, we could strengthen our care and resistance practice in times of the pandemic.

SHORT SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES
Sofia Bempeza is an artist and art and cultural theorist based in Athens and Zurich. Her work focuses on the politics of dissent as well as queer-feminist practices in art and knowledge production. Her research deals with the history of the art strikes; subversion and cultural strategies of the New Right; situated criticism and polyphonic aesthetics. She is co-curator of the queer-feminist festival Aphrodite * in Athens. She has been teaching at Zurich University of the Arts (2011-2017), F + F School for Art & Design Zurich (2018, 2020), Leuphana University Lüneburg / Institute for Philosophy and Art Theory (2018-2021).
Matthias Coers gegenteilgrau.de, mietrebellen.de is freelance filmmaker and sociologist based in Berlin. He cooperates with participating initiatives, organizes lectures and series of events with focus on urban development and social infrastructure. Since the premiere of the documentary “The Opposite of Gray” on the subject of creating liveable urban space, he has been invited to academic conferences, political and cultural organizations and Goethe Institutes in a total of more than 200 lectures and film events held in over 80 cities worldwide.
Artist Valentina Karga’s work operates between art, design, research, and architecture. It draws together elements of socially engaged practices and speculative experiments that question the existing social and physical infrastructures within the realms of energy, economy, and sustainability. She has been a fellow at the Berlin Centre for Advanced Studies in Arts and Science/Graduate school, University of the Arts Berlin, a Saari Fellow in Finland, an NTU-CCA resident in Singapore and a Vilém Flusser Resident in Berlin. Her work has been exhibited internationally. Since 2018 she is a professor at Hochschule für bildende Künste (HFBK), Hamburg.
Madlen Anipsitaki is an architect and city scenographer. With her in-situ installations in public space, she combines art and everyday life, architecture and coexistence in urban space. She studied bioclimatic architecture at the Technical University of Madrid and architecture at the National School of Architecture Paris-Malaquais / Paris University of Fine Arts. In 2018 she founded Collectif MASI together with the sociologist Simon Riedler. With the urban scenography project “A thread network in the urban fabric” Collectif MASI worked in France, Greece and in seven Latin American countries in partnership with local organizations (especially UNAM in Mexico, UNAC in Bogota, Escola Da Cidade in Sao Paulo) Residences/ workshops - interventions in urban scenography/ exhibition of sculptures in public spaces. In 2019-2020 their work was exhibited in the Voltaire exhibition space, international artist residence Foundation Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
Tasos Sagris, Born in 1972 in Athens, Sagris is a theater director, poet, founding member of the Institute for Experimental Art and founding member of Void Network voidnetwork.gr in Athens. His volume of poetry about human love in the western metropolis was published in 2008. The Void Network was founded as an art collective in Athens in 1990 and hosts multimedia art shows, festivals and gatherings in public spaces, underground clubs, art galleries and autonomous social spaces. He is also a founding member of the artists' initiative that runs the self-organized Embros theater www.embros.gr. He was editor-in-chief of Modern Expression newspaper (2013).
James Simbouras s an interdisciplinary artist and curator based in Athens. He is founder of the Trojan DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization), www.trojanfoundation.com/, an initiative by Athens artists in collaboration with blockchain experts. DAOs offer potential for coordinating grassroots cooperation spaces and collaborative art projects as a completely new creative field for building collaborative ecosystems. The Trojan DAO has so far coordinated art exhibitions, joint events and workshops in Athens, Berlin and Osaka and financed local initiatives on art and activism . Simbouras is also a co-founder of the self-organized, decentralized artist and curatorial initiative C.A.S.A. c-a-s-athens.squarespace.com.
Artist Zafos Xagoraris participated in exhibitions such as at the Greek Pavilion, 58th Venice Biennale, 2019, Stamps Gallery, AnnArbor, 2018, documenta 14, Kassel and Athens, 2017, Fondazione Zimei, Pescara, 2016, “PIGS”, Artium, Vitoria – Gasteiz, 2016, Bozar, Brussels, 2014, 4th Athens Biennial, 2013, Museo Riso, Palermo, 2011, Termini Imerese, 2010, Manifesta 7, Rovereto, 2008, 1st Bienal Fin del Mundo, Ushuaia, 2007, 1st Thessaloniki Biennale, 2007 and the 27th Sao Paulo Bienal, 2006. He was one of the curators of the Greek Pavilion of the Venice Biennale of architecture (2004) and the 2nd Athens Biennial (2009). The outdoor installations “Downhill Classroom” was presented at Benaki Museum, Athens, 2015 and NEON city project, Athens, 2016. He is currently Professor of the Athens School of Fine Arts and teaches a course on reconstruction of the past at Freie Universitaet Berlin.He has been invited to present his work at i.a. the Academy of Fine Arts, IUAV, Venice, Academy of Fine Arts, Palermo, School of Visual Arts, NY, the School of Art Institute of Chicago, Academy of Art and Design, Basel.

She has been a fellow at the Berlin Centre for Advanced Studies in Arts and Science/Graduate school, University of the Arts Berlin, a Saari Fellow in Finland, an NTU-CCA resident in Singapore and a Vilém Flusser Resident in Berlin. Her work has been exhibited internationally. Since 2018 she is a professor at Hochschule für bildende Künste (HFBK), Hamburg.
Madlen Anipsitaki is an architect and city scenographer. With her in-situ installations in public space, she combines art and everyday life, architecture and coexistence in urban space. She studied bioclimatic architecture at the Technical University of Madrid and architecture at the National School of Architecture Paris-Malaquais / Paris University of Fine Arts. In 2018 she founded Collectif MASI together with the sociologist Simon Riedler. With the urban scenography project “A thread network in the urban fabric” Collectif MASI worked in France, Greece and in seven Latin American countries in partnership with local organizations (especially UNAM in Mexico, UNAC in Bogota, Escola Da Cidade in Sao Paulo) Residences/ workshops - interventions in urban scenography/ exhibition of sculptures in public spaces. In 2019-2020 their work was exhibited in the Voltaire exhibition space, international artist residence Foundation Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
Tasos Sagris, Born in 1972 in Athens, Sagris is a theater director, poet, founding member of the Institute for Experimental Art and founding member of Void Network voidnetwork.gr in Athens. His volume of poetry about human love in the western metropolis was published in 2008. The Void Network was founded as an art collective in Athens in 1990 and hosts multimedia art shows, festivals and gatherings in public spaces, underground clubs, art galleries and autonomous social spaces. He is also a founding member of the artists' initiative that runs the self-organized Embros theater www.embros.gr. He was editor-in-chief of Modern Expression newspaper (2013).
James Simbouras s an interdisciplinary artist and curator based in Athens. He is founder of the Trojan DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization), www.trojanfoundation.com/, an initiative by Athens artists in collaboration with blockchain experts. DAOs offer potential for coordinating grassroots cooperation spaces and collaborative art projects as a completely new creative field for building collaborative ecosystems. The Trojan DAO has so far coordinated art exhibitions, joint events and workshops in Athens, Berlin and Osaka and financed local initiatives on art and activism . Simbouras is also a co-founder of the self-organized, decentralized artist and curatorial initiative C.A.S.A. c-a-s-athens.squarespace.com.
Artist Zafos Xagoraris participated in exhibitions such as at the Greek Pavilion, 58th Venice Biennale, 2019, Stamps Gallery, AnnArbor, 2018, documenta 14, Kassel and Athens, 2017, Fondazione Zimei, Pescara, 2016, “PIGS”, Artium, Vitoria – Gasteiz, 2016, Bozar, Brussels, 2014, 4th Athens Biennial, 2013, Museo Riso, Palermo, 2011, Termini Imerese, 2010, Manifesta 7, Rovereto, 2008, 1st Bienal Fin del Mundo, Ushuaia, 2007, 1st Thessaloniki Biennale, 2007 and the 27th Sao Paulo Bienal, 2006. He was one of the curators of the Greek Pavilion of the Venice Biennale of architecture (2004) and the 2nd Athens Biennial (2009). The outdoor installations “Downhill Classroom” was presented at Benaki Museum, Athens, 2015 and NEON city project, Athens, 2016. He is currently Professor of the Athens School of Fine Arts and teaches a course on reconstruction of the past at Freie Universitaet Berlin.He has been invited to present his work at i.a. the Academy of Fine Arts, IUAV, Venice, Academy of Fine Arts, Palermo, School of Visual Arts, NY, the School of Art Institute of Chicago, Academy of Art and Design, Basel.
